Queen Conch
Cool Cousins!
As we all know (I think) the seahorse is incredibly clever. But they also have some cousins that are also incredible as the masters of camoflage. The Leafey Sea-dragon, is covered from head to toe in flakey skin that makes it look like a piece of coral. This makes it hard for predators to spot. The Pipefish, comes in lots of different colours and patterns so that if it stood in a clump of seaweed, it would be difficult to spot. My particular favourite type is the zebra striped pipefish.

Snorkeling
Hey guys! Yesterday was awesome because I went snorkeling for the first time in my life! Mega cool ;-) I saw some spotted Wrase which are a type of fish that come in many shapes and sizes. Also, I saw some Brittle-stars and some massive Paua which I wouldn't have seen if I hadn't been in a reserve. It is just so quiet under there! There is so much gear that you have to put on ie. Wetsuit, snorkel, hood, mask and flippers. Definitely a once in a life time experience!
The Man-o-war Jellyfish
One of the most dangerous jellyfish in the world, the Man-o-war's head floats on the surface of the water. However, it can submerge itself if needed, neat right? Its tentacles can grow as long as telephone poles which is considerably useful for catching prey.

The Queen Conch
The Queen Conch is a gastropod mollusk. Mollusks, are soft-bodied animals that may have a hard shell. Queen Conchs have a spiral shaped shell with a glossy pink or orange colours inside. A Queen Conch's habitat is sand and coral reefs. It is usually found in warm or shallow waters and is generally not found deeper than 21 meteres. Unfortunatley, there are not many left due to people not leaving them in their natural habitat.

The under-water alphabet book
Here are some of my favorite pages from a book I have at home.
B is for Basslet. Baby eagles are called eaglets, baby pig are called piglets, but baby bass are not called Basslets. Basslets are little fish that are different from bass.
N is for Nudibranch. Nudibranchs are sea slugs. Sea slugs are not fish, they are mollusks just like clams and snails. On the great barrier reef in Australia, there are more than four hundred different kinds of Nudibranch.
O is for Oldwife. The Oldwife lives in warm waters in coral reefs. It also lives in cold ocean water. Not many fish swim in both warm and cold waters. This fish has two dorsal fins on it's back.

Hello!
Hello! My name is Niamh and I am a year 7 student from NZ. I have created this blog because I am obsessed with anything to do with Marine Biology. My favourite types of fish are the Orange Fairy Basslett and the Nudibranch. In this blog there will be tons of info about the ocean dwellers and also some clips . Enjoy!
